Sometani Shota: Top 10 Project: #6 Yuriko’s Aroma

As a fan of Sometani from way back I debated over where to place this next film. On one hand its one of Sometani’s most recognizable works in a gusty role that caught the attention of many viewers. However, the film, to me lacked umph and somewhat tapered off in the end. Not a long running film be any means, however the film could have benefited from a few edits and ommited scenes. But that’s not to say the end result wasn’t sexy as sin. And the film nonetheless did win accolades and was received favourably, with wins at film festivals both domestic and international. Plus it showcased the talents of Sometani to the world.

The Storyline

What if you woke up to someone licking the sweat off your hair?  How would you react? Furthermore, what if the ‘licker’ is a 30 year old women turned on by your scent.

17-year-old Takeshi (Sometani Shota) experiences such a strangely erotic act. So how does he react? like any normal teenage boy during puberty he is aroused, and seemingly wants more. And thus, a strange relationship is born. Between a 17-year-old boy who has never experienced a relationship before, let alone any sexual actions, and a woman in her 30′s who is turned on, and maybe even in love with, Takeshi’s scent.

Sometani’s role…

Sometani plays Takeshi Tetsuya, a 17-year-old seemingly normal teenager in his Schools Kendo club. What’s different about Takeshi is his sexual and mental frustration about no girl being interested, or at least physically attracted to him, so much so that when the opportunity to experiment with Yuriko’s fetishism happens, he is but a willing participant. Along for the ride and getting his own pleasure.

Opinion

As I said before, Yuriko’s Aroma is commonly known as one of Sometani’s most famous works, and at most seen as one of his earliest works. So at the time he was still argubaly an unknown to many, but his naturalness on camera and gusty acting caught the attention of critics:

Sometani Shota, who plays Tetsuya, is also a great choice for his seemingly normal looks but very interesting facial expressions.  He fully embodies the essence of teenage awkwardness and uncertainty, even handling emotional scenes well. – JKFilmJapan (2010)

And for once this isn’t a Sometani role who is angry at the world – just a young boy on the verge of discovering sex.

Perhaps his role in Yuriko’s Aroma maybe considered not too difficult, but quite challenging to say the least. It’s a film with a lot of sexual undertones. There is also such great chemistry between Shota and his co-star, the exciting Noriko Eguchi.  Psychodrama (2012)
