Born into the business, the son of famous actor Matsuda Yusaku and actress Matsuda Miyuki (Audition), the Matsuda brothers (Ryuhei and Shota) are blessed with a family pedigree of acting talent. However, Ryuhei never had plans to follow his late fathers career and it wasn’t till director Oshima scouted him for the samurai film Taboo (1999) at the age of 15 that Ryuhei discovered his enjoyment in acting. The  role even won Ryuhei the Best Newcomer Award at the Blue Ribbon Awards for his portrayal of the young, deadly naive samurai Kano Sozaburo. So it was no suprise that Ryuhei prompty dropped out of his school to pursue a career in the Japanese film industry, and quickly became one of the most popular, iconic and successful actors of his generation

Ryuhei married Rina Ota in 2009.
